Google’s September 16 holiday Shopping update puts three releases beside each other: AI performance reporting in Merchant Center, a Business Agent beta inside YouTube ads and expanded tools for Universal Commerce Protocol checkout.
They have different entry points. The report is available across five markets. The YouTube feature has specific campaign, country and format requirements. UCP checkout is still a gradual early-access program for select merchants.
For a retailer planning the holiday period, availability comes first. Then product data. The beta application and checkout build belong later, once the account actually qualifies and somebody owns the work behind them.
Start with the AI report you may already have
AI performance insights are available for English-language shopping queries in Merchant Center accounts in Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand and the United States. You can find the report under Analytics, Products and then AI performance.
It shows your share of voice against a competitor set defined in Merchant Center, along with query frequency and the number of your products showing. You can also inspect top terms, popular attributes and search intent across discovery, evaluation and ready-to-buy stages.
Keep the scope attached to the number. The report currently covers organic AI traffic, such as free listings. Paid Ads traffic is excluded, and there is no single report across every product category.
That makes it a product-discovery check rather than a campaign scorecard. Pick one category that matters this season and save the country, date range, share of voice, products showing and the most common missing attributes. If a high-frequency attribute is absent from the feed, check the product page and source data before adding it. The value has to be accurate wherever a shopper can see it.
Save that first view as a baseline. Reopen the same category and filters after the feed change has had time to appear. A different category, country or competitor set creates a different comparison.
Treat Business Agent in YouTube as a qualified beta
Google says the YouTube beta can place Business Agent inside an ad so a viewer can ask product questions without leaving YouTube. The linked interest form sets a tighter boundary than the announcement alone:
- an active Demand Gen campaign linked to Merchant Center feeds, with a minimum budget of $10 per day;
- United States targeting and English language;
- mobile in-stream inventory, with Shorts excluded at the time of the announcement.
Submitting the form does not guarantee participation. Google says selected accounts receive an allowlisting confirmation and that its product group enables the beta on qualifying campaigns.
Before applying, write down the product questions that could change a purchase decision. Check specifications and compatibility, shipping timing, returns, availability and the route to customer support. If you already use Business Agent in Search, run those questions there and save any answer that is vague, outdated or wrong.
Google’s Business Agent documentation says the agent uses Merchant Center information, the retailer’s website and other business data supplied to it. A weak answer can point to a missing field or a conflict between those sources. Fix that source before placing the same conversation inside a paid ad.
UCP checkout is an integration project
The Universal Commerce Protocol integration hub now adds paths such as transferring a cart to the merchant’s site and testing checkout flows. The rollout has firm limits.
Google’s UCP documentation describes gradual United States early access for products sold in the United States. Checkout is available to select merchants. Participation requires an interest form, Google’s approval and a technical implementation. Eligible listings also need a specific checkout field in the product data.
If your store runs on a third-party commerce platform, ask that provider what it supports before scoping custom development. Google gives the same direction in its documentation. A retailer with a custom stack should treat UCP as work across Merchant Center, product data, checkout endpoints, testing and order handling.
This part of the release is retail-specific. Google’s current Merchant Center preparation guide lists services among the categories that are ineligible for UCP checkout. A service business running Google Ads should not read this as a new route from an ad to an appointment or contract.
Put the feed before the holiday feature list
The three updates meet in the product record. The AI report can expose missing terms and attributes. Business Agent draws from Merchant Center and the retailer’s site. UCP checkout depends on eligible product data and accurate account settings.
Work through them in that order:
- Resolve product-data errors and confirm that price, availability, shipping, returns and key attributes agree with the product page.
- Save an AI performance baseline for the category and country that matter most.
- Check the questions a shopper may ask in Search or YouTube against the current data and support route.
- Apply for a beta or early-access program only when the account, campaign, market and implementation owner meet the stated requirements.
If you are already paying for traffic, Glory’s paid-advertising and landing-page work can keep the campaign, destination page and measurement record in the same review. UCP implementation itself should be scoped with the commerce platform or developer responsible for the store.
Open the AI performance report first. By the end of that review, you should know which product-data correction to make, whether the listed YouTube beta requirements fit your account and who owns any UCP conversation. That is enough to make the announcement useful without building a holiday plan around access your account may not have.
